Home: 6 Steps: STEP 4 - Obtaining a Building Permit for your Home Plan
In addition to the house or floor plans for your new home you may require the following documents to obtain a building permit:

- A site plan which shows the location of your house on the property
- A survey outlining the property line
- The setback distances of all proposed and existing structures
- A septic tank system design, if applicable
Depending on your municipality, you will need to insure your house plans are in compliance with local building codes. Many areas have specific energy codes and/ or special engineering requirements that are to be followed.
If you are unsure as to what is required in your area, check with your building department. They usually have written instructions listing all of the items they require you to submit to obtain a building permit.
